Tips for Passing Emissions Testing in Illinois

Last updated on April 26th, 2018

In the state of Illinois, vehicles are required to go through emissions testing before their vehicle can become registered. We are going to give you a few helpful tips to help you pass the emissions test the first time.

How to Have a Successful Test:

Make sure that your vehicle is tested as soon as possible, even if the vehicles check engine light is illuminated. This will give you plenty of time for repairs and have your vehicle re-tested.

You are allowed to test your vehicle if the check engine light is on.

The busiest times for vehicles testing is towards the end of the month and on Saturdays. Avoid these times for a quick test and faster wait times.

You need to make sure the vehicle passes a safety check before you go through emissions testing. If the vehicle is deemed unsafe, you will not pass emissions testing.

When you arrive at the testing station, leave the vehicle running. They will tell you if it needs to be turned off.

Testing stations are closed on Sundays and state holidays.

What to do Before Arriving at the Testing Station:

Bring your vehicles test notice with you.

Make sure you are bringing the correct vehicle that matches the vehicle on the test notice.

Drive your vehicle for 15 minutes prior to testing, this ensures it’s completely warmed up.

If your vehicle was manufactured in 1996 or later, and the vehicle is OBD-equipped, and the vehicle has been serviced recently, make sure to drive the vehicle for a few days before taking it to testing.

If you follow these tips, you will be on your way to passing your emissions test the first time around.
