Alaska Smog Check / Emissions Test

The State of Alaska required Anchorage and Fairbanks drivers to participate in the State’s Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) program in order to meet Alaska’s vehicle emission testing requirements. As of March 1, 2012, The State of Alaska does not require vehicles emissions tests any longer. The Alaskan state legislature voted to stop the state’s emissions testing program because it was too bureaucratic and it added unnecessary expense to the Alaskan residents. The legislature has the option to reinstate the requirement in the future.

How to Reduce Driving Emissions & Pollution in Alaska

Pollution kills upwards of 200,000 people every year. Vehicle emissions tests help but are not always enough. The State of Alaska does provide the public with air pollution and ozone warnings. When the state alerts the public of these air quality incidents, there are several actions residents can take to protect themselves, their families, and environment:

  • Stay indoors when possible
  • Start a ride-share or carpool for work
  • Work remotely or from home
  • Adjust your thermostat up in the summer; down in the winter
  • Use public transportation
  • Ride a bike or walk more often
  • Refuel your vehicle during cooler times of the day
  • Don’t use lawnmowers and other gas-powered equipment
  • Avoid and limit the use of aerosol products, oil-based paints, and solvents.
  • Do more with fewer trips; combine errands and schedule travel around multiple  commitments

Are there any Eco-Friendly Driver Incentives in Alaska?

One would think because there are no vehicle emissions test requirements for Alaskan residents, that the state would have no Eco-Friendly Driver incentives. However, that’s not the case. Alaskan drivers pay 6 cents less per gallon at the pump for using ethanol-based fuels as opposed to using regular gas. With the new gas tax of 10 cents per gallon taking effect in Anchorage on March 1, 2018, drivers may want to consider buying or leasing an ethanol vehicle to pay less at the pump.

Also, the federal government may provide tax incentives for hybrid and alternative-fueled vehicles if a vehicle owner meets certain criteria. Check with a local tax professional. Car insurance providers offer an incentive as well. Some car insurance carriers give their customers premium reductions and other discounts for green driving incentives. Check with your car insurance provider for details.
